Implied probability
What a price says about the chance of the outcome, before the bookmaker’s margin is removed.

What a worse price costs
The single most expensive habit in betting, priced. Compare what you took against what was available.
-4.8%
You took 4.8% less payout than was on offer. On a winning bet of £10.00 that is £1.00 left behind. Repeated across a hundred bets a season, that is where most of a recreational bettor’s losses actually come from.
Bookmaker margin
Enter all three prices in a match-result market and see what the bookmaker is charging you, plus the probabilities once that charge is removed.
3.7%
margin. A market with no margin sums to 100%; this one sums to 103.7%.
| Home | 45.9% | fair price 2.18 |
| Draw | 28.4% | fair price 3.53 |
| Away | 25.7% | fair price 3.89 |
Margin removed proportionally. This is the simple method and it slightly flatters longshots. We use it because you can check it yourself.
Common questions
What is implied probability?
The chance of an outcome according to the price, calculated as 1 divided by the decimal odds. A price of 4.00 implies a 25% chance. It includes the bookmaker's margin, so the probabilities of all outcomes in a market will add up to more than 100%.
What is the bookmaker's margin?
The amount by which a market's implied probabilities exceed 100%. On UK football match-result markets it is typically between 4% and 8%. It is the bookmaker's charge for taking the bet, and it is the reason a bettor with no edge loses money slowly rather than breaking even.
Why does taking a worse price matter so much?
Because the margin is small and the price difference is not. UK books routinely differ by 5% or more on the same outcome. Consistently taking a price 5% below the best available is roughly equivalent to paying the bookmaker's margin twice.
